CONTINEO
CONTINEO is comprised of a new generation of young artists equally adept in both period and modern styles. Playing on the present-active Latin word which means to hold, surround, contain, and connect, contineo signifies not only the defining organizing element of compositions from the baroque period (basso continuo), but also expresses our belief that music is a continuum – one that is inherited and then ultimately developed and changed from one generation to the next. The musicians of CONTINEO seek to preserve these past performance practices, but we also seek to look ahead as well. Thus, our goal is to explore the performance traditions of past musical periods but also to forge ahead, as musicians have done for centuries, by championing the creation of new music, and new performance practices. Our programming reflects this goal: we present works from every style of music and treat it in its appropriate context – from historically informed performances of the Baroque, Classic, and Romantic periods, to modern, contemporary, and newly commissioned works.
